I had to have my ankle fused, but that failed, and I chose to have an ankle replacement. I had 3 surgeries to try to fix it, after a year and a half the ankle joint catastrophically failed. I was able to successfully walk from the parking lot to my seat and back at the end of a Broncos game with no issues!
Tell us your story, how did you become injured/need a brace/an amputee?
I got in a dirtbike accident in October of 1995 resulting in compound fracture plus a break of both tibia and fibula on my left leg. I had 3 surgeries to correct it right after the original injury and was off my motorcycle for 2 years to heal.
When I got back on my bike, I road for another 20 years until October of 2011 when I had to have my ankle fused. The fusion failed in late 2015 and I chose to have an ankle replacement in February 2016. In 2016 I had 3 surgeries to try to fix it, after a year and a half the ankle joint catastrophically failed. Dr. Jacobsen brought up amputating the limb in order to resume a better quality of life. At this time my leg was incredibly swollen and we discovered through a different doctor that the limb was infected. I had my leg amputated in October 2017.
How did you hear about Creative Technology OPS?
My son-in-law was friends with the physician liaison Alina in high school and knew she was an amputee working for a prosthetic company. We had dinner together, my family with her and her husband to discuss amputation.
What do you feel most proud of accomplishing since you became an amputee?
My goal was to be able to go to a Broncos football game on New Year’s Eve, which was 2 months after my amputation. I wanted to be able to walk from the parking lot to my seat and back at the end of the game with no issues or having to stop. I was able to do it successfully!
What do you do in your free time?
I do lots of yardwork, which I wanted to get back to after my amputation.
Do you have any advice you give to new amputees?
Don’t wait too long like I did. If I knew how good it made me feel, how much better I feel after getting rid of that infected leg then I would have done it sooner.
