Living an active life is the best way to keep yourself both physically and mentally fit after a limb loss. Many sports have some kind of adaptation that allows players of any capability to participate. Today, Creative Technology chose to focus on some of the popular competitive sports among individuals using a prosthetic device or wheelchair.
Athletes with amputations, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, brain injuries, and strokes are all eligible to compete in adapted volleyball. There are two styles: sitting and standing. During sitting volleyball, players must keep at least one buttock on the floor whenever they make contact with the ball. In a standing match, athletes have a choice to play with or without their prosthetic device.
Tennis is one of the fastest growing wheelchair sports in the world. The same court, rackets and ball are used as in an able-bodied game. The game rules are the same, with the only exception being that a wheelchair player can allow the ball to bounce twice. Upper and lower limb amputees as well as individuals using walkers and wheelchairs participate in tennis.
Basketball is the most popular sport for individuals with limited mobility. There are a few exceptions to rules regarding contact, fouls, dribbling, and traveling. The rest of the general basketball rules apply. Wheelchair basketball leagues are in many different communities and many individuals with limited mobility find success in the sport.
The rules for swimming are adapted to accommodate those with limited mobility. There are various starting positions and adaptations allowed for visually impaired swimmers. Swimmers may start the race standing on a platform and diving in, sitting on the platform, or starting in the water.
Athletics are a great way for children and adults alike to stay active and socialize with other people who share a common interest with them. Sports have also been found to increase the confidence of those who participate. At Creative Technology, we can help you find the best device to keep your athletic performance at its best!
